The scriptures this week on the tongue have been very convicting and thought provoking. Who can tame the tongue? It takes our desire and the work of the Holy Spirit.
Yesterday I came across a devotion in my daily bread for July. What timing to open to this page. I will just share a portion of it. It will be food for thought....
A researcher and cognitive scientist from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology wanted to study how humans acquire language so what did he do? He and his wife rigged their home with recording devices which they used to collect over 200,000 hours of audio and video footage. He recorded the first 3 years of his child's life. Through the recordings they could hear baby sounds evolve into words.
So, here is the point to consider.
If someone wanted to conduct a research project AT YOUR HOME would you participate IF you knew that your EVERY syllable would be recorded and analyzed? Proverbs 18 offers some insight about unwise speech patterns. Foolish people express their own opinions instead of trying to understand what others have to say. Do we sometimes provoke fights (loud disagreements) with words or speak impulsively and answer a matter before (hearing) it? verse 13
We (I) need to become students of speech. With God's help we can identify and transform destructive
speech into words of encouragement that are "good for necessary edification" and that impart grace to the hearers (Eph 4:29).
A reminder that our words have the power to build up or tear down.
Lord, help us in the area of speech. I am desperate for Your help.
